What is intent data?
Signals that an account is actively researching a category right now, used to decide when to reach out, not who to reach out to.

Intent data — Intent data is third-party or first-party evidence that an account is researching a category, such as content consumption, review-site visits and search behaviour, used to time outreach. It signals interest, not identity.
Why it matters
Intent data captures evidence that a specific account is actively researching a category. It is drawn from signals like content consumption on industry sites, visits to review platforms, or search behavior, aggregated and reported by a third-party provider. First-party versions exist too. A company's own website can track which accounts are visiting pricing or product pages repeatedly. Either way, the signal answers a timing question. Is this account paying attention to this category right now?
What intent data does not do is establish who a person is, or that they have agreed to be contacted. It is a behavioral signal layered on top of an account. It is not a substitute for having a real contact at that account. It is not a basis for consent under laws that require one. A spike in intent signals can reasonably change what a sales team sends and when. Prioritize that account sooner. Tailor the message to the topic they appear to be researching. It does not change whether the outreach itself is permitted. That still depends on the consent and opt-out rules for the channel being used.
How intent data is used
- 1
Signals are collected
Content consumption, review visits or search behavior tied to an account are captured, by a provider or first-party tracking.
- 2
Signals are aggregated by account
Individual signals are rolled up to the company level.
- 3
A threshold or spike is detected
A meaningful increase in activity for an account is flagged.
- 4
The account is prioritized
Sales attention shifts toward accounts showing active research behavior.
- 5
Messaging is timed and tailored
Outreach is timed around the signal and can reference the likely topic of interest.

Questions
- How is intent data different from a buying signal?
- Buying signal is the broader term for any indicator that an account may be ready to purchase. Intent data refers to the structured research-behavior signals, content consumption or search activity, that vendors or first-party tracking compile into that broader picture.
- Does intent data identify a specific person to contact?
- Not on its own. Intent data typically operates at the account level. It shows that a company is researching a category, without identifying the individual browsing or searching. That still needs to be established separately.
- Does a strong intent signal remove the need for consent before outreach?
- No. Intent data affects timing and message relevance, not the legal basis for contacting someone. Whatever consent or opt-out rules apply to the channel still apply, however strong the signal is.
