What is an audience freeze?
The step that turns a live, changing segment into a fixed list of recipients for one specific send.

Audience freeze — An audience freeze is the moment a dynamic segment is turned into a fixed list for a specific send, with suppression, deduplication and caps applied. It makes the exact recipients auditable before anything goes out.
Why it matters
A segment is a live filter. Run it twice on different days and it can return a different set of people. Contacts get added, unsubscribe, or change status in between. That is fine for planning. It is a problem the moment a message goes out, because nobody can say afterward exactly who received it. An audience freeze solves this. It locks the segment's output into a fixed list at one point in time. Suppression rules, deduplication and any per-contact send caps are applied before the list is locked.
The freeze is what makes a send auditable. If a recipient complains about being contacted, or a compliance question comes up later, the frozen list is the record of exactly who was targeted and when. It is separate from whatever the segment might return today. Teams that skip the freeze and send straight from a live segment lose that record. They also risk sending twice to someone who appears in the segment on both the day it was built and the day it went out. In SalesCrew, a campaign freezes its audience as a distinct step before send, not as a side effect of clicking send.
How a freeze happens
- 1
A segment is built
A filter over contacts or companies is defined and run to preview who qualifies.
- 2
Suppression is applied
Unsubscribes, bounces, complaints and holds are removed from the result.
- 3
Duplicates are removed
The same person appearing through more than one path is collapsed to one entry.
- 4
Caps are enforced
Any per-day or per-contact send limits trim the list to what is actually allowed to go out.
- 5
The list is frozen
The resulting list is fixed and stored against the send, independent of the live segment from then on.
The mistake to watch for
Questions
- How is an audience freeze different from a segment?
- A segment is a live filter that can return a different list each time it runs. An audience freeze takes one run of that filter, applies suppression and dedup, and locks the result as a fixed list tied to one specific send.
- Why not only send straight from the segment?
- The segment's membership can change between when it is built and when the send fires. Sending from a live segment means nobody can later confirm exactly who received the message. It also risks re-sending to someone whose status changed in between.
- Does an audience freeze catch someone who opts out after the freeze?
- Not by itself. A freeze locks the recipient list at one moment. Suppression still needs to run again at the point of send, to catch anyone who opted out in the gap between freeze and delivery.
