What is an opt-out?
A recipient's instruction to stop being contacted, given by a link, a reply, or a keyword like STOP.

Opt-out — An opt-out is a recipient's instruction not to be contacted again, given by a link, a reply or a keyword such as STOP. Laws require it to be honoured within a set period and to apply across the sender's systems.
Why it matters
An opt-out is the mechanism a recipient uses to withdraw from further contact. It can arrive several ways: clicking an unsubscribe link, replying with a word like "stop" or "remove", or texting a keyword such as STOP for SMS. Whatever the channel, the instruction means the same thing, and the sender's obligation is the same regardless of how it arrived.
The part that most sending programs get wrong is scope. A person who opts out through one tool, say an email platform, has not opted out only from that tool; they have opted out of the sender, full stop. If the same contact is also enrolled in a CRM sequence or an SMS campaign run through a different system, the opt-out has to reach those systems too, or the recipient keeps hearing from a company they explicitly told to stop. This is why an opt-out has to be recorded against the contact centrally, not only marked inside the tool where it was received, and checked by every channel before it sends again. In SalesCrew, an opt-out recorded on a contact is enforced across every outbound channel from that point forward.
How an opt-out gets handled
- 1
The recipient signals opt-out
They click unsubscribe, reply with a stop word, or text STOP.
- 2
The signal is captured
The channel that received it logs the instruction against the contact's record.
- 3
It is written to the contact centrally
The opt-out is stored on the contact, not only inside the tool that received it.
- 4
It propagates to every channel
Email, SMS, calling and any other outbound system checks the same central flag.
- 5
Future sends are blocked
Every subsequent campaign or cadence step excludes the contact automatically.
The mistake to watch for
Questions
- How is an opt-out different from an unsubscribe?
- Unsubscribe is the email-specific term for the same action. Opt-out is the broader term, covering the same withdrawal of consent by email link, reply, or SMS keyword like STOP.
- How fast does an opt-out have to be honoured?
- Laws set specific windows depending on jurisdiction and channel, and requirements vary. Check the rule that applies to your sending, such as CAN-SPAM for US email.
- Does an opt-out from email also cover SMS from the same company?
- The instruction is to stop contact from the sender, not from one channel, so a compliant sender treats it as covering every channel it controls, not only the one the opt-out arrived through.
