What is data enrichment?
Filling in missing fields on a contact or company record, title, headcount, technology, from external sources, usually paid for per record.

Data enrichment — Data enrichment adds fields to a contact or company record from external sources, such as title, headcount, technology, funding and verified email, so that scoring and targeting can use them. It trades money for fields.
Why it matters
A contact captured through a form, a scrape, or an import rarely arrives with everything a sales team wants to know about them. Enrichment fills in the gaps. It pulls extra fields from external data sources and attaches them to the existing record. A job title. Company headcount. The technology stack in use. Recent funding. A verified email address. It is a straightforward trade. The enrichment provider charges per record or per lookup. In exchange the record gains fields it did not have before.
Those added fields only earn their cost if a team acts on them. Use them to score fit against an ICP, or to decide who gets prospected first. The field that most needs scrutiny is any "verified" flag on an email address. A vendor's verification is a claim made at the time they last checked, not a live test performed right before a send. An email that was valid when a vendor verified it months ago can have gone stale by the time a campaign goes out. A team that relies on send-time deliverability re-verifies emails close to the point of sending, instead of trusting the vendor's flag indefinitely.
How enrichment is used
- 1
A record exists with gaps
A contact or company is missing fields useful for scoring or outreach.
- 2
An enrichment source is queried
An external provider is asked to supply additional data for that record.
- 3
Fields are attached to the record
Title, headcount, technology, funding or a verified email are added.
- 4
The enriched record feeds scoring
The new fields are used to assess ICP fit or prioritize outreach.
- 5
Volatile fields are re-checked
Fields like email validity are re-verified close to send time rather than trusted indefinitely.
The mistake to watch for
Questions
- How is data enrichment different from data cleansing?
- Enrichment adds new fields to a record from external sources. Data cleansing corrects or standardizes fields the record already has, such as fixing formatting or removing duplicates. It does not add new information.
- Is an enrichment vendor's verified email guaranteed to be deliverable?
- No. A verified flag reflects a check performed at some point in the past. Email addresses go stale over time. A flag from months ago is not the same as confirming deliverability right before a send.
- What fields does enrichment typically add?
- Common examples include job title, company headcount, technology in use, recent funding events, and a verified email address. The exact fields available depend on the enrichment source.
