What is an agentic CRM?
Buy on the word agentic alone and you may get agents that send email to prospects before anyone on your team reads it.

Agentic CRM — An agentic CRM is a customer relationship management system in which AI agents plan and carry out multi-step sales work on the same records your team uses. Its purpose is to hand routine pipeline work, like sorting replies and drafting follow-ups, to agents while people keep control of what gets sent.
Why the term matters when you buy a CRM
Salesforce popularised the phrase. Its definition says the agents "plan, execute, and adapt multi-step workflows, without the need for human approval at each step" (salesforce.com, checked September 2026). That last clause is the part you should test in a demo. Skipping approval is fine for tagging a contact. It's a different matter for an email going out under your name.
So the useful question isn't whether a CRM has agents. Ask what each agent may do alone, what waits for a person, and how fast you can stop all of them. A good answer is a written policy per action, a single queue for anything held back, and a log of every step an agent took.
SalesCrew runs each agent in one of four modes: off, draft, review or auto. Every agent starts in review, and one kill switch stops them all.
How an agent works through one task in an agentic CRM
- 1
A trigger fires
A reply lands, a deal stalls or a schedule runs.
- 2
The agent reads the record
Thread, contact, deal stage and past touches.
- 3
It plans the next steps
Classify, draft, update, then decide what to send.
- 4
Policy sorts each step
Internal work runs; outside sends wait.
- 5
A person approves or rejects
The reason for a rejection feeds the next run.
- 6
Every step is logged
Who acted, when, and on which record.
Agentic is a claim about the vendor's agents, not about your access
Questions
- What is the difference between an agentic CRM and a CRM with AI features?
- An agentic CRM runs agents that complete multi-step work, while a CRM with AI features adds single assists such as a summary or a suggested reply. The test is whether anything happens after the suggestion. If a person still has to click every step, the CRM has AI features, not agents.
- Which tasks should an agentic CRM be allowed to do without approval?
- Internal, reversible work is the usual line: research, tagging, scoring, summaries and logging. Anything that reaches a prospect, such as an email, a LinkedIn message or a proposal, is usually held for review. Stage changes and record deletes sit in between, and many teams review those too for the first weeks.
- Does an agentic CRM replace sales reps?
- An agentic CRM takes over the routine steps around a deal, such as sorting replies and drafting follow-ups. Reps still own calls, pricing talks and the final say on what gets sent. The time saved goes into conversations rather than admin.
- How do you stop a CRM agent that is doing the wrong thing?
- You switch its mode to off or hit a global kill switch, then read its action log to see what it did. Ask any vendor to show both during the demo. A stop control that lives in a settings file or needs a support ticket is too slow for an agent that sends email.
