What is A2P messaging?
SMS sent by software rather than a person, like reminders and alerts. It is the reason carriers treat it under different rules than a text between two people.

A2P messaging — A2P (application-to-person) messaging is SMS sent by software to people, such as reminders, confirmations, alerts and marketing, as opposed to person-to-person texts. Carriers route and filter it under separate rules and registration requirements.
Also known as: application-to-person messaging
Why it matters
Carriers distinguish between two kinds of text traffic. P2P, person-to-person, is what happens when one phone texts another directly. A2P, application-to-person, is a message sent by software on behalf of a business. An appointment reminder. A confirmation code. A marketing text. Carriers route, filter and price it differently because it comes from a system, not a person's own phone.
That distinction exists because A2P traffic is where spam and fraud concentrate. Carriers apply registration requirements, sender verification and throughput limits to it. A business sending A2P volume without registering as such is treated as suspicious by carrier filters, however legitimate the content is. That is why registration is not optional at any real volume.
How A2P traffic differs from P2P
- 1
The message originates from software
Sent by an application or platform, not typed on a phone.
- 2
It's registered with carriers
The sending business and its use case are registered ahead of sending at volume.
- 3
Carriers apply A2P-specific filtering
Throughput limits and spam filtering differ from what a personal number gets.
- 4
It's routed and rated separately
A2P traffic carries its own carrier fees and delivery rules distinct from P2P.
The mistake to watch for
Questions
- What is the difference between A2P and P2P messaging?
- P2P is a text sent directly from one person's phone to another. A2P is a message sent by software on behalf of a business, at volume. Carriers apply separate registration, filtering and pricing rules to it, because it comes from a system rather than an individual.
- Do I need to register for A2P messaging?
- In the US, sending business SMS at any real volume generally requires registering through a framework like 10DLC. Sending unregistered A2P traffic risks having it filtered or blocked by carriers, whatever the content. This is not legal advice. Check current registration requirements with a provider.
- Why do A2P messages sometimes fail to deliver even when properly registered?
- Delivery can still be affected by carrier filtering on content, sending patterns that look automated or spam-like, or throughput limits tied to the registered use case. Registration reduces the risk of blocking. It does not guarantee every message delivers.
