When should you bid on Upwork jobs?
Within six hours of the post. After that, replies fall off a cliff, while the first 15 minutes matter less than people think.

The short answer
- Bid on an Upwork job within six hours of the post. GigRadar's Q2 2026 Upwork report puts the real drop in replies at six hours, not in your first minutes.
- Being first by a few minutes is overrated. GigRadar found the 15-minute advantage it reported in March 2026 halves once the data matures.
- What you send matters more than when you send it. In GigRadar's Q2 2026 data, a cover letter with a Loom or video link got replies 11.3% of the time, against 6.0% without one.
- Where you bid matters most. GigRadar measured an average reply rate of 5.1% in Q2 2026, but engineering jobs replied at 10.3% and web development at 3.7%.
Why the first 15 minutes are overrated
You'll find plenty of advice telling you to bid in the first few minutes. GigRadar, which tracks proposals sent through its own platform, reported a strong 15-minute effect in March 2026. In its Q2 2026 Upwork report, it re-ran the numbers on a full quarter and found that edge halves once late replies come in.
Your client won't always reply in the same hour. Some take weeks, so early data makes fast bids look better than they are. GigRadar's own summary is blunt: March oversold speed, and the real cliff is at six hours.
So give yourself a working window. If your team can read a job, check the client and write a real proposal inside a few hours, you're inside the window that counts.

What to do instead of racing
Filter first. A job that fits your category, budget and client history is worth a careful bid in hour three. If it doesn't fit, it isn't worth your bid in minute two, because every bid spends connects.
Then put your effort into the letter. A short video where you walk through the client's problem nearly doubled the reply rate in GigRadar's sample. That's a bigger effect than speed, length or word choice.
Last, record the outcome of every bid. Upwork's market moves fast: GigRadar counted 448,118 jobs posted in Q2 2026, down 14.2% on Q1. Your own reply rate by category is the number that tells you where to bid next quarter.
SalesCrew's Upwork module is built for that loop. Saved searches run on a schedule, and a gate filters jobs on your thresholds before a person sees them. Each proposal you send is recorded with the profile that sent it. Outcomes like interviewed, hired or no reply are written back, so your win rate by category is a query. A person starts every proposal, and the submit waits in the approval queue. Marketplaces come with the Agency tier at $1,200 a month, with unlimited seats.
A fast bad bid still costs connects
Questions
- Is it worth being the first to bid on an Upwork job?
- Less than most advice says. GigRadar's Q2 2026 Upwork report found that the 15-minute advantage it reported in March halves once the data matures. The drop that matters comes at six hours. A strong proposal you send within a few hours beats a rushed one in the first minutes.
- What is a normal reply rate on Upwork proposals?
- GigRadar measured a 5.1% reply rate and a 17.7% view rate across the proposals it tracked in Q2 2026, down from 5.8% and 18.3% in Q1. The report itself warns against using 5.1% as your benchmark, because category changes it so much. Compare each category against its own line instead.
- Does adding a video to an Upwork proposal help?
- Yes, by more than timing does. In GigRadar's Q2 2026 data, cover letters with a Loom or video link got replies 11.3% of the time, against 6.0% without one, across 13,522 letters. A GitHub link went the other way, at 3.3%.
- Which Upwork categories reply most often?
- In GigRadar's Q2 2026 report, telemarketing replied at 16.1%, engineering at 10.3% and customer service at 9.6%. Web development sat at 3.7%, and it also absorbed 57.4% of all agency bidding in the sample.
