How do I link a lead to an opportunity for the same person?
Open the lead. In the Opportunities card, click Link next to the open opportunity for the same person. Most pairs link on their own. When a lead and one open opportunity share a contact, they are linked for you.
What you will need
- The right to edit the opportunity. You own it, you made it, or you are a manager.
- A lead and an opportunity for the same contact.
Steps
- 1
Step 1
Open the lead. Scroll to the Opportunities card.
- 2
Step 2
Under it you see open opportunities for this person that have no lead.
- 3
Step 3
Click Link. The opportunity moves into the list above.
- 4
Step 4
To undo it, click Unlink on that row. The pair is then never linked again on its own.
- 5
Step 5
Managers can change the rules in Settings → Lead stages → Lead ↔ Opportunity.
- 6
Step 6
Link automatically joins a lead and the one open opportunity for the same person. It is on unless you turn it off.
- 7
Step 7
Closed Lost disqualifies the Lead is on as well. When an opportunity moves to Closed Lost, its lead moves to Disqualified. The reason comes from the list on that card. The lead gets a note with a link to the opportunity. Open tasks on both are closed.
- 8
Step 8
The Review on that card lists people with more than one lead or opportunity. Those are never linked on their own. Pick the right pair and link it by hand.
Common errors
- "Already linked to another lead"
- unlink it from that lead first.
- "This lead already has an open opportunity"
- a lead has one open opportunity at a time. Unlink the open one first.
- "For different people"
- the lead and the opportunity have different contacts.
- "You cannot edit this opportunity"
- ask its owner or a manager.
How you know it worked
The lead page lists the opportunity. Both timelines show "Lead and opportunity linked". The lead no longer shows "Not converted yet".
