How do I turn an opportunity back into a lead?

Open the opportunity and click Convert back to Lead. The lead goes back to an open stage. Its notes, activity, tasks, meetings, emails and files move to the lead. The opportunity leaves the pipeline. Use it when a lead was converted by mistake.

What you will need

  • The right to edit the opportunity. You own it, you made it, or you are a manager.
  • An open opportunity. A won or lost one cannot go back.

Steps

  1. 1

    Step 1

Open the opportunity. Or find its row in the Opportunities table.

  2. 2

    Step 2

Click Convert back to Lead. On the table it is the arrow icon at the end of the row.

  3. 3

    Step 3

Type a reason if you like. It is saved on the lead's timeline.

  4. 4

    Step 4

Click Convert back to Lead again to confirm. The lead page opens.

  5. 5

    Step 5

An old opportunity may have no lead. Then a new lead is made from its contact and company. It starts as Qualified.

Common errors

The button is missing
the opportunity is won or lost. Only open ones can go back.
"You cannot edit this opportunity"
ask its owner or a manager.
"Already has another open opportunity"
this person's lead has a second open opportunity. Close that one first.

How you know it worked

The lead page opens. Its timeline shows "Converted back from opportunity" with your reason. The old notes and tasks are on the lead. The opportunity is gone from the pipeline. You can convert the lead again later.

Where this goes in SalesCrew

The lead page opens and its timeline shows "Converted back from opportunity. In your own workspace the same how-to opens beside the field, with your callback URLs filled in.
