How to route inbound leads
Round-robin, territory, and load-based are the three common routing models. Which one you choose matters less than how fast a lead reaches a rep once it lands.

Why the routing model is not the main lever
Teams often spend a lot of time deciding between round-robin, territory-based and load-based routing, treating the model choice as the main decision. In practice, all three fail the same way if the handoff itself is slow. A lead assigned correctly to the right rep, but sitting in that rep's queue for hours before any action, produces the same poor outcome however sophisticated the assignment logic was.
The model does matter for fairness and fit. Round-robin is simplest and works well for small teams with roughly interchangeable reps. Territory-based routing fits teams organized around geography, industry or company size, where a specific rep's expertise matches certain leads better. Load-based routing fits teams where deal volume varies enough between reps that pure round-robin would overload whoever is in an active stretch.
Whichever model is chosen, the escalation path is what protects response time. A lead assigned to a rep who is on leave, in back-to-back meetings, or simply slow that week needs a way to move on if it is not actioned within a defined window. Otherwise it sits invisibly in one person's queue while a manager assumes it is being handled.

What to actually check in your own routing setup
Measure the time between a lead arriving and the first action taken on it, not only whether it was assigned. Assignment happening at once means little if the assigned rep does not open or act on the lead for hours. If that gap is consistently large for certain reps or certain lead sources, the fix is more likely an escalation rule or a workload adjustment than a different routing algorithm.
It also helps to separate routing quality from lead quality when diagnosing a slow response. A lead that sat unactioned for hours might reflect a real routing gap. Or it might reflect a rep deprioritizing a lead they judged low-fit on sight, which is a different problem with a different fix. Review a sample of slow-response leads for what happened, not only how long it took. That avoids treating every delay as a routing failure when some are judgment calls worth a separate conversation.
